Maathai, the Tree Woman

Why Tree Woman?

"Woman Tree" It is a tribute to Maathai, who in this contest is the icon of the theme "Women and the Environment". Two protagonists who have suffered throughout history and little by little get up to fight. Feminist movements are getting stronger and women finally have their own voice. Then there is our Planet Earth that still suffers the apathy of thousands of people who degrade their own home.

Our goal is to reward, give the place they deserve, women and the environment and create awareness step by step, because if there is no environmental justice there is no social justice.

Who was Maathai?

Wangari Muta Maathai (1940-2011) He was a Kenyan Politician and Ecologist, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, he founded the Green Belt Movement, among thousands of socio-environmental contributions.

This woman is an example of feminine pride, in 1979 Mwangi Maathai divorced, who said that Wangari "had too strong a mentality to be a woman" and that he was "unable to control her". In addition to calling her "cruel" during the trial, he publicly accused her of adultery. After a dispute with Judge Wangari is sentenced to 6 months in jail, however after 3 days in prison, the charges are dropped and Wangari is free.

This is just a summary of the struggle and its list of 26 recognitions (awards, grand and medals) for its contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.
